Singing Through Doubt
You start to sing and your mind gets loud.
“Was that too flat?”
“Do I sound okay?”
“Did I mess that up?”
The voice is trying to come out. But the thoughts won’t sit still.
1. Doubt Means You Care
You feel doubt because you’re paying attention.
That means you’re aware, not wrong.
But when the thoughts get louder than the sound, you disconnect from what’s actually happening.
What it looks like:
- You freeze before the phrase even starts
- You keep replaying a mistake instead of finishing the line
- Your breath gets shallow while your brain runs ahead
2. You Can’t Think Your Way Out
You can’t solve doubt by arguing with it.
Telling yourself to calm down usually makes it worse.
The way forward is through the body. Get grounded again.
What helps:
- Feel your feet on the floor
- Let your breath settle before the next note
- Sing one line on a simple vowel. Not to perform. Just to feel it.
Let your body take the lead.
3. Doubt Can Stay, but It Can’t Lead
You don’t need to erase doubt.
You just don’t have to obey it.
Let it sit quietly while you stay with the phrase in front of you.
What to remind yourself:
- “That was a thought, not a fact.”
- “This moment matters more than that mistake.”
- “I’m here to sing, not defend myself.”
Final Thoughts
Doubt shows up in singers who care.
It might not leave right away.
But it gets smaller when you keep going.
Sing through it. That’s how you get free.
